BJ had yet to take her eyes off Lyndsey who continually glanced out the front window of the gallery. Mason had her scared. The girl’s trembling fingers told BJ that much. But between Ransom and Riley hovering over her, if Mason was watching, he’d have to be aware they had Lyndsey well-guarded.

“I’m not sure Lincolnville is the type of place for me,” Bernard said. “Seems everywhere I go there’s crime. Might have to head back to England.”

Elaina’s face paled. Lyndsey grabbed her friend’s hand.

“You can’t get away from crime, even in your merry old England.” Ransom’s tone sounded a touch snide. He swigged the remainder of his soda.

BJ enjoyed the two men’s attention. It’d been a while since any man other than her husband gave her much notice. “Lincolnville is probably one of the safest towns in the United States,” BJ said. “We just have junk that flows in every once in a while.”

“It concerns me when it comes to Elaina.” The Englishman touched his granddaughter’s cheek.

“She’ll be fine.” Lyndsey swung her arm over Elaina’s shoulder. “I’ll see to it.”

Ransom laughed. “And who’s gonna protect you?”

“You will.” She batted her eyelashes. The levity released some of the tension from her face she’d exhibited moments earlier.

“Excuse us.” Matthew strolled up beside them. “We wanted to say good-night. I need to get this wife of mine home to bed. She’s dead on her feet.”

Lydia slouched against him. “Yes, she is.”

“I’ll see you in church?” He kissed BJ on the cheek.

“Of course. Would you like to join us, Bernard?”

“I’ve got another meeting tomorrow.” He looked over at Elaina. “Maybe I’ll drop her off on my way if she’d like. Then she can walk home.”

“Or stay with us for lunch,” BJ said.

“She could even spend the night.” Lyndsey raised her eyebrows in hopeful anticipation. “Then you don’t have to worry about her?”

“Unfortunately tonight’s not good. She’s got some chores to do. Maybe next time.” He finished his wine in one gulp. “In fact, we need to be going ourselves.” Bernard gave BJ a kiss on the cheek. His lips were wet from his drink. “We’ll see you soon.”

Elaina clung to Lyndsey’s arm.

“Come along, Elaina.” Bernard’s stern voice surprised BJ.

“See ya.” Elaina gave a slight wave of her hand.

“Bye.” Lyndsey kept watch on Elaina until she disappeared.

Ransom leaned over to BJ. “I noticed you didn’t invite me to church,” he whispered.

“I figured if you were watching Lyndsey, you’d be there.” BJ enjoyed watching Ransom squirm when Bernard was nearby. Elation sat in her stomach, even after Mason’s rude appearance.

They milled about for another half hour before Ransom escorted BJ and Lyndsey to the Jeep. He held the door open for BJ. When she climbed into the seat, the slit in her dress opened. Ransom gazed at her toned legs. She let loose a cough to draw his attention back up.

“See you tomorrow.” He slid his finger down the side of her face.

“See you.” Her voice choked.

He chuckled and walked away.

How could she let him get to her like that? Touching her gently.
